I have recently received an above average number of emails asking for help regarding varying behavior levels of bottle fed alpacas and llamas – both male and female. One described a single female who has been alone with her human family and bottle fed since she was just one day old. I am simply incredulous that folks are even able to acquire a single newborn. All of these emails report that the humans are shocked and upset by increasingly aggressive behavior.

While I sincerely care to assist, the requests have become overwhelming. It is great that you are asking and getting assistance is important. If you have sent me an email requesting help around your animal’s now seemingly sudden change in behavior and have not heard back from me -- or, even if you have -- please immediately do the following:

  • Find a mentor
  • Ask for assistance and guidance
  • Learn all you can about alpaca and/or llama behavior – including inappropriate human handling
  • Join your organizations

Organizations are your connection to the alpaca and/or llama informational highway. Information, education, networking with others, conferences, expos, clinics, seminars, newsletters and libraries – all for us -- are why these organizations exist. Not only are they important for humans, they are important for the health and welfare of our animals.

Every year the Llama Association of North America hosts an Expo in June with guest speakers from around the country. This year, renowned camelid veterinarian Dr. Murray Fowler, will be presenting as well as other expert speakers. The LANA Expo offers a wealth of education for both the llama and alpaca owner.
